The Path of Life

Updated: Aug 30, 2022

I remember this verse filling me with such hope and promise as a teenager looking out ahead at the "unknown" - What an amazing promise to claim! THOU – Jehovah God – The Creator of the Universe – “Thou wilt shew me the path of life!” Thou wilt show ME?? Little human ME? Faltering and Failing and so often Faithless ME?? YES! God’s Word gives this amazing promise that HE will show ME the path of life!

I can trust my Saviour to direct my steps! HOW will he show me HIS PATH? “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105) He will use His Word – the Scriptures – the precious truths found in my beloved Bible – to show me the steps I should walk and the path I should take through this life! Proverbs 3:5-6 states “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

Not only can I experience the PATH … but look at the PRESENCE of God – oh the fullness of joy by simply being “in thy presence”– spending time with my Saviour! The “one thing” that’s truly important – the “one thing” my heart should seek – allowing the presence of God within my heart and life.

David said it this way, “One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.” (Psalm 27:4) Jesus himself stated that truly only “one thing is needful” (to spend time with our God and listen at His feet) “and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42) Jesus simply wants to talk with us, He wants to spend time with us, He wants us to be close to Him, to listen to what He has to say to our hearts … allowing Him to go with us throughout every part of our day – oh the joy of His Presence in our lives! At the end of the day, when we look back on all we have accomplished with our time allotted to us – did we spend time with our Saviour? Did we enjoy His presence? We so often rob ourselves by being “too busy” to simply spend time with our Lord – He has such fullness of joy for the child of God who learns to invite and enjoy the presence of God in their life.

God has a PATH for us, He honors us with His PRESENCE, but look at the PLEASURES that are at His right Hand! “there are pleasures for evermore.” You’ve probably heard the phrase, “He’s my right hand man!” This simply means that this person is the one who helps you out the most. Are you at God’s right Hand? Are you close enough for Him to pick you up and use you? Are you available? With service and being used of God comes great pleasure for the child of God.

Throughout Scripture, the right hand is a symbol of authority, blessing, strength and even used in separating the sheep from the goats at the judgment - “And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.” (Matthew 25:33) Being on the right side is important for our eternal destiny – for those who have trusted Christ – we are at His Right Hand – where there are truly pleasures for evermore! Not only in eternity are there pleasures – but right here, right now, today – Christ has pleasures for my life! Psalm 37:4 states, “Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” Not the empty pleasures of the world – Hebrews 11:24-25 speaks of the “pleasures of sin for a season” -- oh no – we are speaking of eternal riches – the true, genuine, and completely fulfilling pleasures that only Christ can give – “a heart that’s contented, a satisfied mind; these are the treasures money can’t buy! If you have Jesus, there’s more wealth in your soul than acres of diamonds and mountains of gold!” (lyrics to “Acres of Diamonds” written by Arthur Smith)

I am so very thankful that God will show me the PATH of life; in his PRESENCE is fulness of joy, and at His Right Hand, there are PLEASURES for evermore!!
